Chapter20

When he was finished laying out his stock, Cal pushed the front door open and stood looking out into the street, his steaming tea mug in his hand, the warm smell of honeyhock drifting up to his nose. He was looking forward to coffee when Alyn opened, but tea would do for now.

Light was staining the cloudy sky pink and purple, and the first early workers were out and about. A few other shops were getting ready to open, but it was cold and there was no one in the street who didn’t have to be, so no point in opening up just yet.

Over the street from where Cal stood there was a shop that sold good quality cloth for making clothes. The cloth merchant waved companionably to Cal from behind his window. Next door, Cal could hear thumping of kneaded dough and singing, and could smell yeast and fresh bread baking. Apparently, Alyn had managed to get a decent rise out of the morning’s bread after all.

Max came down, yawning and rubbing his eyes, about an hour later.

“Sleep okay?” Cal asked.

“Yeah, I think so. That spider, though. Something weird about it.”

“It’s enchanted,” Cal said. “Actually, there’s a bit of a mystery there…”

Max held up a hand. “Wait a bit,” he said, and disappeared out of the shop, returning a few minutes later with breakfast of fresh bread and butter, crisp bacon, and mugs of strong coffee. As they sat at the counter and ate, Max asked what Cal had been saying about the enchanted spider upstairs.

“Well, you know how I was telling you about my eyeglass last night?” Cal said.

Max nodded, chewing breakfast.

“When I turned it on the spider, it showed me an enchanted creature, with a Blank core.”

“Is that strange?” Max said. “Would you not expect that to happen?”

“I wouldn’t expect it at all,” Max said. “Monsters with cores are exclusively found in the Monsterlands, the big island to the west of Roon, starting at Westmountain shore and extending out into the northern wilderness and the western wastes. Ships sail from Jutlyn city out north and west to give monster hunters the chance to get cores. And core-equipped monsters never just randomly appear in the city.”

“Except in your upstairs room,” Max pointed out wryly.

“Except there,” Cal said with a laugh. “I wondered if it was some experiment of Darkworth’s, but I don’t have any way of knowing.”

“You could ask your monster hunters to catch it,” Max suggested. “Once they come back from their next run.”

“I guess I could,” Cal said. “I hadn’t thought of that. To tell the truth, I kind of wanted to keep it a bit quiet, because it’s so strange. I don’t want some nosey parker from the Pedantus Guild coming snooping around.”

“I don’t want that either!” Max said with feeling. “If the guild knew where I was, they’d tell my father, and then…”

“Then what?” Cal asked.

“I don’t know, actually,” Max said. “I suppose then I’d have to tell him that I stole and then lost the Barwell Amulet.
